A Perry Hinges, based on Doulton Road, Cradley Heath, held their own Wear it Pink day in aid of the Breast Cancer Campaign. The company’s intial target was £2,000 but they eventually reached £2,480 thanks to a series of fundraising activities.
As well as donations for wearing pink clothes, they organised a monster raffle with donations ranging from days out at the West Midlands Safari Park and Worcester race course, meals and tickets for the theatre and £100.
Operations director Guy Perry said : “We have been supporting this special day for several years and our aim is always to beat the previous year’s total.
“Many of our customers have supported us in this venture as well as our staff who certainly entered into the spirit.
“Some of the costumes they wore were quite unique and hilarious.”

Yet with 5,000 different products on the shelves at its West Midlands factory, A Perry & Co. (Hinges) has, in its 80-year history, never failed to fulfil that proud boast.
Yes, it may seem over the top but that’s the essence of the business’, said Ian Dunnaker, a director of the company.
While not all the products are allied to the fencing industry, A Perry has developed a formidable alliance with fencing as one of the foremost suppliers of products.
‘Over the years the range has grown considerably,’ said Mr. Dunnaker, ‘and our catalogue has expanded each year with new products being added all the time. Today something like a quarter of our products are allied to fencing, if not more.’
The range includes products and accessories for chainlink fencing and netting, wire rope, panel fencing products, barbed wire support and strainers, fencing tools plus fencing post support systems.
‘We are always looking at how we can improve the range and finding out just what the industry wants. Discussions are on-going about products and we are continually listening to what contractors want and how we can source it or provide a solution,’ he said.
A Perry can trace its roots back to 1925 and has continued as a family firm. It was in 1955 that it transferred to the Doulton Road site in Cradley Heath where it has remained developing the site into a purpose built factory, warehouse and offices spanning more than 50,000 sq feet.
Four years ago the company acquired the stock and machinery from the administrators of Eliza Tinsley, as well as employing a number of staff, to launch their Threaded Bar range of products.
‘That gave us the ability to produce and supply a wide range of threaded bar and related products. Unlike others in the industry we have not been afraid to maintained a manufacturing operation, indeed we have expanded our capability. That means we can handle the bespoke requirements of the industry, while also supplying the more standard’ said Ian Dunnaker.
While market conditions have changed, A Perry has steadfastly stood by its family heritage and its determination to focus on its core customer base.
‘We have concentrated on what we know and listening to the market has helped us to increase our market share and protect our position as the largest supplier and manufacturer of such products to the fencing industry.
‘Stock is essential and in dealing with the trade through merchants we have become aware of the need to be a one-stop shop, as well as being able to deliver quality products on time.
'Our reputation has been built on our past and so will our future.' |

29 October 2010 |
In true tradition the staff paid a 'fee' to get dressed up in some weird and wonderful outfits, all based on the colour pink (pictured right) and a fun day was enjoyed by everyone. Each department organised their own costumes, many being hand-made specially for the occasion, and prizes were awarded for the Best Department, Best Individual and Best Director.
We have exceeded our hopes and expectations and raised a grand total of £2480.21 from this year's event which included the proceeds from a raffle that has been very generously supported, both in terms of donated prizes and ticket sales, from sources within the company and from outside the company by friends, customers and suppliers alike.
All the staff would like to thank those individuals and companies who generously donated prizes for the draw that took place today (29th October 2010, National Pink Day) at our offices. Prize winners will be notified by their ticket seller or by telephone from the office.
Please see below a full list of all the prize winners and, once again, a big thank you to all of the people who brought a ticket for helping to make the event such a success.

He is the latest in a proud tradition at the 80 year old ironmongery firm, which has seen seven employees with over 50 years service, and more than a dozen with over 40 years service in recent years.
After joining A. Perry at the age of 16, Barry is now retiring from full time employment but will continue with the company on a part-time basis.
He joined the company as a tool setter and, although he has helped out in other areas of the business, his principal job has remained the same.
Guy Perry, operations director at the firm, presenting Barry with a gift, said: “We have a long tradition of individuals and family members spending their entire working life working for A. Perry. Our chairman, Ernie Perry, has worked for the business for a remarkable 80 years and at 92 he still attends work every day to carry out useful tasks.
“Long service is unfortunately celebrated less these days particularly in this area where traditional manufacturing industries are now few and far between. Employees such as Barry have helped A. Perry survive periods of dramatic economic and environmental change and I extend a personal thank you to their unfailing support.”
Already a well-travelled man, Barry looks forward to more travelling and spending time with his family and five grandchildren.
A. Perry manufactures and supplies traditional hardware including, chain, hinges, door and window furniture, threaded bar and fencing hardware.
Founded over 80 years ago, in 1925, the business is now the largest independent manufacturer and supplier of ironmongery and threaded bar in the UK.
Based in Cradley Heath in the West Midlands, the business occupies over 50,000 sq ft of manufacturing and warehousing space with over 80 employees. |

In the past 18 months staff numbers have doubled to 80 at A. Perry & Co.
Specialists in manufacturing and supplying hardware and ironmongery products, A. Perry is enjoying year-on-year growth in what is a fiercely competitive market targeted by overseas businesses.
The company was started more than 80 years ago by Arthur Perry, manufacturing general ironwork and hinges. Today, five generations later, it is the largest independent manufacturer and supplier of hinges, hardware and ironmongery in the UK.
It has added to its successful track record by buying up the threaded bar business, machinery and stocks of the old Glynne Robinson business from the administrators of Eliza Tinsley in April 2006. This produces bars of threaded metal for fasteners such as bolts and screws.
Alan Dunnaker, threaded bar sales director at A. Perry said “Moving into the manufacture of threaded bar was a strategic move for A. Perry. Controlling our own manufacturing meant we could offer a “bespoke” service – any thread, any length, any material and also no minimum order size.
“Our position today is that we have retained and actually increased all the jobs that were previously at risk when Tinsleys went into administration, we’ve taken sales to record levels.” |

Cradley Heath based A. Perry & Co. (Hinges) Ltd., started out as a family business in the early 1920s when Arthur Perry asked his son Ernie to help him make a selection of hinges and gutter brackets.
The business started at a workshop at their home in Lawrence Lane in Old Hill before they found a bigger premises.
In 1953 it opened at its current base in Doulton Road, Cradley Heath. Ernie, now aged 92, still visits the business every day as he has done for 80 years. Grandson of the founder, Guy Perry, 43, the operations director said the secret of the firm’s success was a quality product and hard work.
He said today “It is, you could say, a basic product but you always have to use these in industry. Some of our products have been used at stables belonging to the Royal Family. We had a dip a few years ago and we went down to 37 staff but since then we’ve doubled to about 80 people.
“We have put ourselves out there. We offer good service, a good quality product and apply sheet hard work. We now expect to expand by another 40 per cent in the next few years and will take on 10 new staff” he added.
The firm has also bought a business which made threaded bars, which is a type of screw, by purchasing all the machinery and stocks from the administrators of Eliza Tinsley, which was based next door to its site, in April 2006. The firm now offers a “bespoke service” offering any thread, and length or material and no minimum order size. |
