Care and Maintenance of Brass Products
07 October 2008
All brass products supplied by A. Perry & Co. (Hinges) Ltd, are of the very best quality and have been treated with a hard wearing lacquered finish. It is imperitive that under no circumstances whatsoever, should any of these products be treated with a metal polish or any form of abrasive cleaner, otherwise the lacquer coating will become damaged, resulting in marking and early discolouration.
Product Usage
Internal: Products merely require regular dusting with a soft cloth, supplemented by occasional wiping with a damp cloth having been immersed in warm soapy water and then buffed afterwards with a dry soft cloth.
External: Products should be treated all as above, but it is advisable to apply a thin coating of a good natural wax polish once a week, to keep the finish in a good condition.
After prolonged exposure to the external elements, the lacquered finish may break down due to varying adverse atmospheric conditions, should this occur, any remaining trace of the lacquered finish can be removed by the gentle and careful application of a mild acetone based cleaner, applied strictly in accordance with the manufactures instructions. The brass product will then be in a suitable condition for cleaning and polishing, all as previously described above, but with the added application of a suitable good quality none abrasive metal polish or cleaner.

Where any abnormally large wooden doors or particularly heavy wooden gates are required to be fitted with Hook & Band type hinges, our Technical Department will provide a free of charge written specification upon request.
Precautions relating to Bright Zinc Plating
07 October 2008
Bright Zinc Plating is a finish for internal use only and is totally unsuitable for situations where moisture of any form (ie. rain, condensation or high humidity) comes into contact with the plated surface of the hinge, as over a relatively short period of time this can cause oxidation, mottling / pitting, tarnishing and ultimately rusting of the plated surface.
The above condensation / moisture type situation can also be accidentally created when hinges fitted to doors that are then removed and sealed in shrink-wrap or bubble-wrap etc. for protection on site, as the enclosed / sealed protective condition can cause "atmospheric sweating" and resultant condensation, along with its associated problems with regards to the effects of moisture. Bright Zinc Plated finishes must always be kept dry and preferably installed in well ventilated areas when plaster or paintwork is in the process of drying out.
Perry's Butt Hinges are manufactured and have been fully tested to conform to BS7352:1990 (Preformance of Metal Hinges for Side Hanging Applications.) in the classifications shown wherever possible. For advice or technical information on any hinge not classified our Technical Department will be pleased to assist and offer advice as applicable.
To find the class of hinge required first establish the total weight of the door and the maximum annual number of cycles the door will be required to open. Then look up the class needed to meet these requirements in the table below.

Please Note
The design weights are based on three hinges per door being fitted, if 2 hinges per door are fitted then the design weight should be reduced by one third.
When "None-Back Check" Door Closers are fitted it is necessary to add 20% to the effective door weight when calculating the classifiaction of the hinge required and double to actual door weight when "Back Check" Door Closers are to be fitted.
Should any doubts arise, we would be pleased to offer the services of our Technical Sales Department for guidance and any assistance necessary.
When fitting any type of Butt or Backflap Hinge having 2, 3 or 5 knuckles, the leaf with the pin or the greater number of knuckles should always be fitted to the door frame and not the actual door.
When fitting any type of Butt or Backflap Hinge having two, three or five knuckles, the leaf with the pin or the greater number of knuckles should always be fitted to the frame and not to the actual door.
When hinges are fitted they must immediately be oiled with a light machine oil and this lubrication must be repeated at least every 6 months. When environmental conditions are abnormal, ie. high temperature, low humidity or both, or when the door is subjected to exceptionally heavy usage, lubrication must be increased to at least once every 3 months to ensure smooth operation and to avoid excessive wear.
With No.466 Rising Butts, No.467 Falling Butts and No.457 Lift-Off Butt Hinges grease must be used and not oil. We recommend Lithium 3 Grease or equivalent and it must be applied regularly every 3 months to both the pin and the total area of contact between each leaf.
When fitting hinges with screws the correct size screw must always be used. The practice of partly hammering the screw intoposition must not be used as this will cause internal delamination, which could seriously affect the preformance of the doors particularly when exposed to fire.
To avoid excessive wear, all hinges should be fitted in precise alignment, failure to correctly align will cause excessive wear to occur resulting in ultimate failure of the installation.
Finishes for Exterior Use.
Hot Spelter Galvanized
Sherardized
The above finishes are the only ones we would recommend for external use.
Hanging of 'Handed' Door and Window Hinges
08 October 2008
Where hinges are required handed the direction of closing needs to be clearly specified. Based on the International Standards Office Recommendations ISO R1226:Part 1, any of the following methods can be used to specify rotation of closing.
For Doors Closing as below specify :
Clockwise Closing, Figure 5 or Left Hand
For Doors Closing as below specify :
Anti-Clockwise, Figure 6 or Right Hand
